TWU Gymnastics captures 2010 MIC Championship

DENTON, Texas (March 27) – The Pioneers were on fire last night as the claimed the 2010 Midwest Independent Conference Championship title with a score of 193.275 on Saturday at Kitty Magee Arena. This marks TWU’s second crown (2006) in school history.

The Pioneers edged second place Illinois State (193.150) by .125. Southeast Missouri State finished third with 193.100 while Illinois-Chicago came in fourth with 191.325 and Centenary placed fifth with 189.525.

Freshman Brittany Johnson captured the all-around title with a score of 38.850. Sophomore Marcella Fallon won the vault title with 9.875 while freshman Kristin Edwards captured floor with 9.850 and sophomore Rashonda Cannie tied for first on bars with 9.800. Johnson also finished second on beam with a team-best 9.750.

“This was one of our goals beginning of the season and we can cross this one off the list,” said TWU head coach Frank Kudlac. “It was a great team effort and nice to win in front of our home crowd. But we are not done at. We will enjoy this for 24 hours and get back to work for USAG.”

The 2010 MIC postseason awards were announced following the meet. The Pioneers won three of the five major awards. Cannie was picked by the five MIC head coaches as the conference’s Athlete of the Year. TWU assistant coach Lisa Klein was named Co-Assistant Coach of the Year along with Jimmy Wickham of Southeast Missouri State. Kudlac was selected MIC Coach of the Year.

The Pioneers will return to action when they host the 2010 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships on April 15-17 at Kitty Magee Arena. TWU has captured nine titles in the past and is aiming for its tenth in 2010.
